Gaultheria (Wintergreen) Essential Oil

Description: With a strong minty aroma, Wintergreen oil is highly regarded for relieving muscle and joint discomfort.

This small shrub is typical of Nepalese flora and belongs to the same family as the blueberry and heather. It likes damp undergrowth with acidic soils and is remarkably resistant to the low temperatures of the Himalayas. It produces small scarlet fruits every winter. Its essential oil, extracted from its dark green evergreen leaves, has a characteristically intense, spicy, caramelised smell.

Description

Quality Gaultheria fragrantissima, is native to Asia, particularly Nepal. Gaultheria procumbens is native to North America. Although their essential oils appear to be biochemically interchangeable, their difference is at the margin: Gaultheria procumbens is the simpler of the two and Gaultheria fragrantissima is more complex in its composition. Therefore, their smells are not exactly identical, the latter being particularly fragrant. We also prefer this species because it is certified “organic”. We have more reservations about the cultivation and storage methods of Gaultheria procumbens. Botanical family: Ericaceae Latin name: Gaultheria fragrantissima Origin: Nepal – high altitude Cultivation: Controlled organic agriculture – Certisys-BE1 control Distilled part: Leaf Production process: Steam distillation Quality: 100% pure, natural and chemotyped Olfactory notes: warm, deep, very characteristic Main constituents Esters: methyl salicylate (99.7%), ethyl salicylate Aldehydes: traces Our opinion The personality of this sweet gaultheria is more nuanced than it seems. Originally from Nepal, we appreciate its environment and the care taken in its cultivation. Precautions for use Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in children under 7 years of age. Not for oral use, harmful if swallowed. Do not use for broadcasting. Do not apply to injured skin. This oil has a tendency to irritate when used pure, so be sure to dilute it sufficiently for skin use. Fluidifying effect, do not use in individuals on anti-coagulant therapy. Not to be used in persons allergic to aspirin (and salicylates). Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with the eyes.
